Rod Bickel

Rod with Ironman Champ Norman Stadler
Rod Bickel - Nashville
Rod started cycling in 1985 due to a knee injury, but never envisioned it turning into a career.  "I went to watch the Memphis In May Triathlon in 1988, volunteered for the run leg and decided that next year I would do the bike leg on a relay team.  From that point I started racing in triathlons and duathlons every year."

Rod first got into the cycling business when he couldn't find triathlon specific products or a good wrench to tune his bike.  Rod's first bike shop started as a hobby and was just a way to pay for his own bike goodies and racing.

A short time later Rod met bike fit guru John Cobb in Shreveport.  John helped Rod get started in the bike business and worked with him on many bike fit sessions.  "I don't know if I should thank John or cuss him for getting me into this business.  Now I enjoy helping customers find the best cycling equipment and fitting them properly to their new bike. "

"The biggest joy about cycling is not just the fitness you gain but the great people you meet and the wounderful places you see while riding.  I can honestly say I have truly met life long friends thru cycling."

Mel Clark - Memphis
Mel@rbscyclery.com

Although he was born in Bogotà, Colombià, South America, Mel spent his youth in Southern California.  "After high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. during which time I attended school and received a degree in Civil Engineering, and later a Master's in Business Administration."

Mel has been riding and working on his own bikes for most of his life, from an old Huffy he rode as a
child, to his Schwinn Traveler that he frequently rode around base while in the Corps. In recent years his love cycling has been rekindled and currently you can find nine bikes in his garage, ranging from his road bike to Bongo the cargo bike, also known as the "family station wagon."

"Most mornings I enjoy riding the Greenline or riding to work when Otter the bus needs a rest." Mel participates in many charity rides, but loves the MS 150 the best.

Mel is married to Louise, who he met during a sailing regatta.  Mel and Louise are avid sailors, fly fishermen, campers, Volkswagen enthusiasts and, of course cyclists.  Louise and Mel share their house with four very spoiled dogs and his son Bryan, also a United States Marine, when he has time to visit.

Mel is the owner of our Memphis, TN location.

Jay Williams Jay and Kat with 2010 Ironman World Champion, Macca

Jay on a MTB ride at Lake Tahoe

Jay Williams - Nashville
Road bikes, mountain bikes, tri bikes, cars, motorcycles, etc..., if it has wheels and mechanical parts, Jay is into it.  Jay's love for tinkering and wheels landed him a job at his local bike shop when he was 16 years old.  "Wow...Or should I say Yikes!!!... I've spent half my life in the bike shop."

Jay's own competitiveness in cycling and triathlon directed him into a Master’s Degree in exercise physiology at the University of Texas.  "The focus of my studies at Texas were endurance performance, cycling mechanics, and sports nutrition."

After graduation, Jay opened and managed a triathlon store in San Antonio, Texas.  During that time, Jay was invited to work with USA Triathlon as one of the World Cup bicycle mechanics.  "This position allowed me the unique opportunity to travel the world and meet some of the worlds best endurance athletes."

In 2008, Jay packed his bags for California and worked with Specialized Bicycles as a product manager. At Specialized, he worked with product management and engineering to develop new bikes and components for road bikes.

Jay came back to his passion for science and coaching as an exercise physiologist at Endurance Performance Training Center in San Francisco.  "At EPTC, I had the unique opportunity to work among the nation’s best exercise physiologist, bike fitters and cycling coaches."

"Today, I am back home in Tennessee doing what I love. I'm excited to share my 16 years of cycling knowledge and experience with you.

Jason Oakley - Nashville
jason@rbscyclery.com

As a teenager, Jason started backpacking and exploring trails in and around middle Tennessee.  The summer after high school, Jason went to Colorado to backpack for a week and "never came home". "When I learned that mountain bikes could move me through the trails faster than hiking, I was HOOKED!"

"Road riding took a little more time to fall for, but that happened while I toured and rode the back roads in and around Vermont".  "I have ridden many trails through the years but by far the best, in my opinion, are the tight, rooty single track trails in the East."

Jason worked out of his garage shop for many years. He has been working as a professional bike mechanic in bicycle shops since 2002. Jason has experience in restoring vintage bicycles. He is skilled in correct frame alignment, wheel building, and overhauling internal hubs. He is also well-versed in fixing modern bicycles that are equipped with ten and eleven speed groups.

"I love a challenge, and problem solving is one of my favorite things to do in the shop, so feel free to bring me some problems."

Todd Holtgrewe

Todd on the fixie in Midtown Memphis

Todd Holtgrewe - Memphis
Todd@rbscyclery.com

Todd was born and raised in Paris, TN a short drive away from Memphis. Todd moved to Memphis
in the fall of 2004 to pursue a degree in Logisitics and Supply Chain Management from The University of Memphis.

Todd has been interested in riding bikes his entire life. "I can recall the many hours tinkering in my parents garage as a kid on my first bikes.  I consistently broke them and would spend more time repairing than riding."

Along came a drivers license and Todd gave up riding for driving. "I didn't ride a bike for
about 5 to 6 years, but in 2008 I decided I wanted to get back into riding. I purchased a bike shop quality mountain bike and rode all the trails that Memphis and the surrounding area had to offer."

A road bike purchase soon followed and cycling quickly became and obsession. "I got my first job
within the industry in 2009.  I worked at a local Memphis shop for a year and a half and then worked
at a local sporting goods stores as their lead bike technician."

When Todd isn't working or in class you'll find him out and about with friends burning up the road or trail on one of his six bikes. "I ride all over the city and frequent many of the local shops group rides. See you out there!!"

Don Moderow Don out for a round of golf Don on a local bike ride

Don Moderow - Memphis
Don@rbscyclery.com

Don has been riding bikes for over fifty years!  Don is an Air Force Veteran and FedEx Pilot and has used his bike to explore cities and country sides all over the world.  He has been a member of several bike clubs through out his career.  "Biking is one of the best ways to stay fit.  I know so many people that can enjoy riding even when their knees will no longer let them run."

Don learned about R.B.'s Cyclery in 2009 by participating in their Saturday group rides before putting on the R.B.'s shirt and working part time.  "I truly enjoy being around real cyclist and promoting biking to those that have not been so lucky."  When Don isn't able to rid ehis bike, he loves to pretend he's a golfer.

Easton - Shop Gaurd Dog

Ruffff...Ruffff...Ruffff!
If I'm not sleeping in my comfy bed, then you can usually find me wandering around the shop keeping watch for crumbs dropped by my bike shop buddies. I might be an old lady now, but in my hay-day they called me a "natural born killer".

My only requirements for friendship are lots of yummy treats and pets.  My favorite part of the day is venturing outside to get the m.a.i.l.  (I'm not supposed to know the spelling of that word - don't say anything to Rod).
